Sony Radio Academy Awards 2011: full list of winners

Ronnie Wood named Music Radio Personality Of The Year at Sony Radio Academy Awards

The popular former Radio 1 presenter spent several months resting after cancer treatment but returned to the airwaves last month.

Wood – known for his colourful love life and battle with the bottle – landed his prize for his series on Absolute Radio. He beat Radio 1's Moyles and other nominees such as Jarvis Cocker, Frank Skinner and Scott Mills to the prize.

However, he missed out on the Sony DAB Rising Star Award – for which he had also been shortlisted – to former Premiership star Robbie Savage in a public vote.
Outspoken Savage, who has just retired as Derby County captain, won for his role as co-host of 5 Live's 606 show.
Vine was named Speech Broadcaster Of The Year, while his interview with Brown was named Interview Of The Year. He spoke to Mr Brown shortly after the Prime Minister had a run in with Gillian Duffy on the campaign trail last year, which became one of the defining moments of last year's general election.
Judges praised Vine as "a broadcaster at the top of his trade".

Murray – who has hosted Woman's Hour since 1987 – was honoured with the Gold Award.
The presenter, who turned her hand to stand-up comedy for Comic Relief earlier this year, was lauded for "a career of exemplary broadcasting, for her incisive yet sensitive interviewing skills, her championship of the woman's perspective and the inspiration she has given to others".
Fellow broadcasting stalwart Nightingale, the longest serving presented on Radio 1 after 40 years service, took the Special Award.

Judges recognised her "exceptional broadcasting including her breakthrough achievements, her championship of the new, and the inspiration she has given to music makers and broadcasters alike".
Commercial station talkSPORT took the big prize as national station of the year for the first time.
However rival sport station Radio 5 Live took home the biggest haul with six prizes, including breakfast show of the year for Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty.

The station's prize tally also included Best Sport Programme for Colin Murray's Fighting Talk.
Radio 2's Simon Mayo took the award for Best Sport Programme, while Radio 1's Zane Lowe was named Music Broadcaster Of The Year for a fourth time.
Radio 3's Jez Nelson landed the Best Specialist Music Programme title for Jazz On 3 and Absolute Radio's Annabel Port – who appears alongside Geoff Lloyd on the drive-time show – was rewarded as Best On-Air Contributor.

Professor Brian Cox, the former pop star and physicist, also celebrated winning the prize for Best Speech Programme.
The 43-year-old, who found fame in the 1990s as the keyboard player with D: Ream, picked up the award for his Radio 4 series, The Infinite Monkey Cage, which he hosts with comic Robin Ince.
The Frank Skinner Show on Absolute landed the Best Entertainment Programme prize.

Tim Blackmore, chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards, said: "In spite of the continuing emergence of new platforms and of video ubiquity, the creative use of sound continues to attract massive and regular support from the vast majority of the British public.

"This is entirely down to the skills and talents of radio professionals in all sectors of the audio business and it is these awards that continue to highlight their ever impressive levels of achievement."
Nightingale had to be helped to the stage by Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt because she was worried about tripping.
"I thought I'd be so clever and wear these studded shoes and I've put my foot through the hem," she said.
"Thank you for letting me work in this profession."

Baker was touched by his award and many of the audience were on their feet as he took to the stage to collect the trophy from Natasha Kaplinsky.
"I've been here many times before – mainly losing. It's been a hell of year and it feels like it may have just turned a corner," he said.

Vine joked that he had been slightly worried Gordon Brown may have been in the audience as he collected his interview prize. The broadcast had drawn extra attention because the moment was captured on camera.
Vine said: "Why was there a camera in the studio with Gordon Brown? I still don't know the answer."

Wood collected his award moments after a delighted Frank Skinner had been presented with his prize.
Wood said: "This means more to me than it means to Frank, I think, because I'm the newcomer."
The 63-year-old was named Music Radio Personality Of The Year at the ceremony in London tonight, beating figures such as Chris Moyles.

Radio 2's Jeremy Vine was a double-winner, including a prize for his interview with Gordon Brown moments after he was caught on microphone referring to a voter as a "bigoted woman". The pre-election interview famously left the then Prime Minister with his head in his hands.
Long-serving presenters Jenni Murray and Annie Nightingale were each given honorary awards at the annual event which recognises the cream of radio talent.

Danny Baker – who recently returned to work after being treated for cancer – was given a rousing reception at London's Grosvenor House Hotel as he collected the prize for Speech Radio Personality Of The Year.
Judges hailed Baker, a host for BBC London 94.9 and Radio 5 Live, as a "true original – a personality who's found new and innovative ways to use the techniques of radio, whether he's delivering a unique verbal barrage or creating an endless stream of compelling ideas".

Nicky Campbell brought laughter from the audience as he paid tribute to co-host Fogarty with an accidental slip of the tongue, calling her the "breast broadcaster" in the room, before quickly correcting himself.
Fogarty – who has just left the 5 Live breakfast show – was complimentary about her ex-colleague.
She said: "I struck gold for seven years working alongside and getting to know the best in the business, Nicky Campbell."

Murray – collecting the final prize of the night – admitted she had been taken by surprise at her award.
"I made a vow a number of years ago that I would never pick up a microphone or speak into a microphone after having drunk alcohol. Tonight I broke my rule because I didn't think this was going to happen," she said.
